The Shellback Tavern came to life as The
Surf in 1952. Famous for their pizza and reasonably priced drinks, the Surf
became an instant hit on the beach bar scene. The original owners were Don
Hartsong and Ed Jamison. In 1973 local bartender Richard Swartz and his
partner Jim Korshall purchased the bar and renamed it the Shellback Tavern.
Jim sold his interest to former Hermosa councilman Jack Wood. Jack sold
to local resident and patron Steve Petroff in 1976. Steve and Richard remained
partners until May of 2000. Manhattan Beach native Bob Beverly took over
ownership in 2000 and still owns the Shellback today.
